TwentyTen for BuddyPress

34

WordPress 3.0 is out and with it a new default theme. If you’re running BuddyPress, you already know it needs a bit of love when you pick a standard theme. Sure, you can also add the BP Template pack plugin, but why reproduce the workload on the tweaks?

Here’s a zip of a BuddyPress child theme for TwentyTen. TwentyTen BP (1625)
I’ve filed a trac ticket to get it included with BP itself, so if we can get as many people testing it and providing feedback, that’d be great.

Note: Please make sure you are running WordPress 3.0 and you have BuddyPress enabled. Do NOT activate the BP template pack plugin as there will be function collisions and you’ll white screen.

EDIT: The theme has been updated and the menu bar is in the right spot. Please test again if you had issues.

I may not be getting it…
The normal Twenty Ten theme works as a theme for an individual “site” in a Multi-Site installation. The BP toolbar comes from the main site’s theme (in this case, BuddyPress default).
If I try activating this child theme on the main site, the BP toolbar goes blank and I get the toolbar content (activity, etc.) in the footer. I put this child theme as a sibling of BP Default (in /plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/bp-twentyten). Am I missing something?
WP 3.0 in French (official release from fr.wordpress.org), BuddyPress 1.2.4.1, very few plugins, no theme customization.

    Hi there,
I installed your theme and loaded it. The admin-bar seems to be working fine. However pages like members do not allign correctly. take a look at
    http://www.cabonk.com/members/

Also I was wondering I started getting blank pages for logout or if i install any theme etc. after upgrading to WP 3.0 .
I am no programmer but do know how to change css files etc. Please let me know what changes i can make to fix this if any.

I tried it with the newest BP and WP 3.0 (Single). I am also getting the toolbar content (activity, etc.) in the footer.

    Any tips?

    Hi,

There is no menu at the top of the theme when the child theme is active, the bp menu is at the bottom and unstyled.

  5. Brian says:

The menu manager doesnt carry over the category menu items either, when the menu is selected.

  6. Brian says:

Also the community menu item and sub menu items are not added to the main menu.

New theme is working fine for me :)

  8. Brian says:

The top menu is still looking like http://skitch.com/tyndie/djqee/dock tested in ff and safari.

  9. Brian says:

The is an issue with the main menu rendering too, http://skitch.com/tyndie/djqmt/dreamweaver

Also the bp menu stub and submenu items are not added to the main menu, plus menu items for plugins such as the bp links manager are not automatically added to the main menu either.

  10. Brian says:

The generator image for wordpress is also missing.

  11. Brian says:

Not seeing any difference with the latest version, still menu issue with rendering http://skitch.com/tyndie/dktp4/dock

missing generator image, and bp menu in the footer.

    Hi,

After 3 days and nights of installing, modifying, deleting, uninstalling, installing again, and round and round and around, I am hoping that someone here can save me from this set-up nightmare.

Although I have a very good plugin-rich WP site, I am very new to all Buddypress things. I am trying to set up a BP site for a community group I run, and am struggling with the basics. We have to move our site from Ning because they’re going to start charging on 20th July. I’ve been delegated to create our new home, and since I know WP reasonably well, I’m struggling so bad with Buddypress.

I have a couple of simple questions that when answered, I think I’ll be able to continue on by myself, but until I get answers, I’m just so stuck.

So, if you can help me with these, I’ll be eternally indebted to you :)

    1. Do I need to run WordPress MU to have BP-Groupblogs work?
    2. If yes, do I need WPMU and WPBP installed, or just one, and if so, which one?
    3. Do I install TwentyTen and then install TwentyTen BP?
    4. Do I need WildCard DNS on my server to run the above?

So, basically, I think I need a step-by-step to installing BP and it’s basic themes (TwentyTen looks good) and the necessary plugins that I need to run a site that allows for group blogs too.

I am waiting with baited breath for your help.
    Thanks,
    Helene

      1. Do I need to run WordPress MU to have BP-Groupblogs work?

install WordPress 3.0 and enable the network (http://codex.wordpress.org/Create_A_Network), you will already have the TwentyTen theme installed and you will be able to use the Group Blog plugin.

      2. If yes, do I need WPMU and WPBP installed, or just one, and if so, which one?

I’m not sure what you mean by WPBP. In addition to WordPress, you also need to install BuddyPress.

      3. Do I install TwentyTen and then install TwentyTen BP?

See answer to #1. If you want to use TwentyTen with BP then you need the TwentyTen BP child theme.

      4. Do I need WildCard DNS on my server to run the above?

Only if you run a subdomain network. If you choose subdirectories when installing the WP network, then you don’t need wildcard subdomain support.

    Hi,

I have been trying to make a child theme of bp-twentyten. But it seems like WordPress won’t accept this kind of tweaking since WordPress just says that the parent theme doesn’t exists.

Do any of you know how to get around this error?

    Thanks

    • Ron says:

You cannot make a child theme a parent of another child theme. You will have to modify TwentyTen BP and apply the changes you were planning to use in your child theme.

  14. Andre says:

Thank you for doing this. I recently made a comment on the development blog saying this needed to be done. I do have 1 comment and 1 question about this theme.

Comment – There is a bullet point next to “Home” on spiritpost.com. This is a custom menu. I have a similar menu on spiritpost.com/squared, using the regular 2010 theme which does not have a bullet point next to the main menu.

Question – Why doesn’t this theme show up on WP.org, enabling it to be easily updated?

    Thanks again,
    Andre

  15. Ramona says:

Just installed your child theme. I see the same bullet points in the nav menu as Andre refers to. As in an unordered list. Is there somewhere in the css to turn this off? Otherwise, looks like this will fit in nicely (and easily) with a thesis theme main site. Thanks.

  16. dani says:

Hello, thank you for your work, it’s a great one. I would have just one question. Everything looks fine but the social network part needs some styling. Did you make it or I have to write a custom css for it? There is the example how it looks now: http://mke.klogplus.hu/tagsag/tagok/ Thank you!

The bullets in the navigation menu (@Brian): if you are making a new menu (Appearance > Menu), the html markup will be different as in the Twenty Ten BP navigation menu. You have to insert a few line of css, like these:

    #access #whateveryouwanttocallyourcustommenu {
    list-style-type: none;
    }

  17. russ says:

I have installed and activated the theme and it looks exactly like the original theme, I do not have any of the buddypress menus, just the basic wordpress ones. Have I done something wrong?

  18. Russell says:

Twenty Ten is a great theme by itself, I like your budypress theme framework it is very helpful.

I just made my own Twenty Ten child theme and wrote up a series of 5 tutorials so that anyone who wants to make their own child themes can follow along. The theme is called Oh One Oh Two, and though it may not be the sexiest theme ever, it is a Twenty Ten child , and I documented how I created it.

The theme was released GPL and people can download it and see just how it fits together at http://0102.atlwpusers.com
